Raiders Victorious in First Lacrosse Game on Campus

February 17, 2024

Their second game of the 2024 season marked a major milestone for the Raiders, the first-ever lacrosse game hosted on campus at Moorpark College. After a 2023 season that saw them exclusively on the road, they returned home in front of a sizable crowd at the Moorpark College Soccer Field.

The Raiders did not let their nerves get the best of them, coming out hot in the first 5 minutes notching three straight goals, all from Freshman Brett Enderle. The Warriors from Westcliff  responded right back with three straight goals of their own, with Freshman Hayden Perry giving the final goal of the first quarter to give Moorpark a 4-3 lead heading into the first break.

The second period saw the Raiders start to struggle. They were able to notch two goals, both from Freshman TravisLee Hooker, but the Warriors scored four goals of their own, including a buzzer-beating goal heading into the half, leaving the score 6-7 in favor of the visitors.

Westcliff would continue their hot streak at the beginning of the third quarter, scoring two goals off the bat and bringing the score to 6-9 for the Warriors. However, the Raiders stormed back, adding three goals, two from Hooker and one from Enderle, ending a contentious third period knotted at 9 for both teams.

The final period would be a low-scoring affair, with no scores through the first ten minutes. Hayden Perry would break this scoring drought with a rifling shot to the top left corner, giving the Raiders the go-ahead goal with under five minutes left. After a stand that saw Freshman Goalkeeper Matthew Binns make several saves with Wescliff players shooting right at the doorstep, Sophomore James Lockmann would find Sophomore Austin Corpuz to put the nail in the coffin and give the Raiders a two-goal lead with under two minutes left that they wouldn't relinquish.

Sophomore Goalie Noam Michael started the game in the cage for the Raiders, stopping 5 shots and allowing in 7 goals (42%), and Binns stopped 9 while allowing in two goals in the second half (82%).

The Raiders went with a face-off by committee approach, with Corpuz (5 wins, 4 losses), Sophomore Aiden Krebs (6 wins, 4 losses), and Sophomore Long Stick Midfielder Josh Bailey (1 win, 2 losses) splitting reps at the faceoff dot. Bailey also led the Raiders with 7 ground balls.

Assist were also added by Perry (3 assists), Lockmann (2 assists), Corpuz and Sophomore George Li.

The Raiders will be going on the road next weekend to face the University of Arizona's Division II squad in Tuscon, Ariz. The next home game at the Soccer Field will be on March 26 when Moorpark hosts Southern Oregon University.

Raiders Fall Short in First Game of 2024 Campaign

February 3, 2024

Moorpark Raiders traveled out to Claremont College to face off against the Claremont College Cougars. The Cougars recently came off a 2023 season that saw them win their first round match-up in the SLC Division 2 playoffs.

After the Cougars put in two early goals, the Raiders were able to strike back with two first quarter goals from Freshman attackman Hayden Perry, equalizing the game at 2-2 after the first period. The middle two quarters saw the Cougars get back out on top, as they outscored the Raiders 5-1 during the second and third quarters, leaving the score at 7-3 with one quarter remaining. The Raiders rallied back in the fourth quarter, scoring three straight goals to bring the game within one before giving up one final goal to the Cougars to being the  final score to 6-8 in favor of Claremont.

The Raiders were paced by Sophomore midfielder Austin Corpuz, who scored three goals and contributed one assist. Freshman attackman Brett Enderle also added a goal and two assists. Soph James Lockmann added an assist, and Hayden Perry also contributed with an assist to go along with his two scores.
